Dragon Sculpture for Universal Studios
Materials: FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic), Internal Steel Frame, Marine-Grade Gel Coat
Dimensions: 8m L x 3.5m H x 2.5m W
Project Overview
A massive custom dragon sculpture for a themed attraction at Universal Studios. This centerpiece installation required precise engineering to meet theme park safety and durability standards.
The Challenge
The sculpture needed to withstand Category 16 typhoon-force winds while maintaining an intricate, lifelike appearance. The client required a lightweight but extremely durable structure that could be installed on a moving platform as part of an interactive ride experience.
Our Solution
Our engineering team designed a hybrid structure combining an internal steel skeleton with a lightweight FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) shell. The steel frame was custom-fabricated with wind-load calculations exceeding local building codes. The FRP shell was hand-layered with marine-grade gel coat for maximum weather resistance.
The Results
The dragon sculpture was delivered on schedule and has been operating daily for over 3 years without any structural issues. The client reported zero maintenance requirements and praised the realistic finish that photographs and films beautifully under all lighting conditions.
"QianChen delivered an exceptional piece that exceeded our expectations. The engineering behind the wind resistance gave us complete confidence in the installation."
