12 Life-Size Animal Sculptures for Chicago Zoo
Materials: FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic), UV-Resistant Paint Coating, Stainless Steel Armature
Dimensions: Life-size (varies by species, 1.5m to 4m H)
Project Overview
A set of 12 life-size animal sculptures commissioned for a new educational exhibit at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. The collection includes native North American and African savanna species.
The Challenge
The sculptures needed to withstand harsh Midwestern winters with freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and heavy public interaction. Each piece required museum-quality anatomical accuracy for educational purposes while being durable enough for outdoor placement with no barriers.
Our Solution
We created each sculpture using high-density FRP with premium UV-resistant paint systems. Armatures were engineered with stainless steel internal supports. Each animal was sculpted based on photographic references and zoo biologist consultations for anatomical precision. The UV coating provides 10+ years of color retention.
The Results
All 12 sculptures were installed in phases over 4 months. The exhibit has become one of the zoo's most popular attractions. The sculptures have required minimal maintenance and the colors remain vibrant after two Midwest winters.
"The level of detail in these sculptures is remarkable. Our visitors often mistake them for real animals from a distance. The quality has held up beautifully through Chicago winters."
